Often times when applying for a position on a company's site there is only one document that can be attached with the application. Obvious choice is the resume. BUT a cover letter is very helpful when marketing ourselves. So I was wondering when applying online should I put my cover letter into my resume document? The cover letter would be page 1 and the resume pages 2 & 3 in my case. Would this work? Or would it backfire due to the nature of the ATS? Thanks for all the great info on the site.

There are different schools of thought on cover letters, but I like them and I always read them. With that being said, it might be best for the online file to have your resume first and the cover letter second. I'm recommending this (which probably seems backwards to what you would do if you handed someone the package) because some recruiters will want to get right into your resume. Those with a little more time can scroll through the pages and also read your cover letter.

I'm a CAREEREALISM Career Expert, and it's important you demonstrate your attention to detail and alignment with company culture. If the application only asks for a resume then only send a resume. However, if you know enough about the company and the people to believe that they'll appreciate under-promising and over-delivering, sending a cover letter can help to differentiate your candidacy. There is no right/wrong answer to your question. It's a gut feeling based on what you can read between the lines. If anything is unclear then deliver what was asked, and nothing more. I totally agree with Michael Peggs that the company probably had certain reasons for not including the field for a cover letter. The main goal of a cover letter usually is to motivate the recipient to take a look at the resume and include some additional info that’s not included into the resume. However, if the application form lacks a special field, adding an extra page to your resume would be excessive. However, it’s only my biased opinion and you probably know better what is appropriate for your situation.
